About the Foundation

Leoš Janáček Foundation was established by the Czech Music Fund on December 19, 1991 from the royalties of Leoš Janáček’s music and literary works.

Its mission is to develop continuously the spiritual values emanating from Leoš Janáček’s whole-life work. It is represented by a broad spectrum of activities from the publishing of Janáček’s musical scores (both practical and critical versions), literary and theoretical writings, correspondence and other documents to the support of concert and theatre performances of Janáček’s works.

Leoš Janáček Foundation gives a high priority to studies on various aspects of Janáček’s life and work as well as to extensive research works that will enlarge the knowledge of the outstanding composer. Another important task of the Foundation is to provide a support for young musicians who might interpret Janáček’s ideas in the future.

Leoš Janáček Foundation is governed by the Board of Directors and Supervisory Board. Everyday administration is provided by the Foundation Office.

As the administrator of Leoš Janáček’s spiritual and cultural heritage, the Foundation is obliged to care for the preservation and expansion of extensive collections of Leoš Janáček’s manuscripts and memorabilia deposited in the department of music history of the Moravian Museum in Brno. The expert restoration and classification of the existing collections need substantial financial resources. On the turn of millenium the Foundation accomplished the complete renovation of Janáček’s memorial in his native Hukvaldy and took part in renovating Janáček’s Memorial in Brno, Smetanova Street.

The Foundation has established Leoš Janáček Information Centre to concentrate the care about Janáček’s heritage within contemporary culture. The Foundation also initiated the formation of Editio Janáček – a company to publish the Complete Critical Edition of Janáček’s works.
